Originally founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, this ancient city has been home to Queen Cleopatra, the Pharos Lighthouse (Lighthouse of Alexandria) – one of the seven ancient wonders, and the Great Library of Alexandria. Today, the great weather, pleasant old-world charm and wealth of historic sites attract tourists from all over the world.


Make the most of your Alexandria holiday

Visit Fort Qaitbey, built in 1480 from the ruins of the original Pharos Lighthouse, and enjoy the uninterrupted views over the Mediterranean. Explore the ruins of Kom el-Dikka, right from a Roman theatre to a Ptolemaic temple. Or if you’re feeling adventures, venture inside the catacombs of Kom el-Shuqqafa. While you’re on the history trail, make time to stop by Pompey’s Pillar in Carmous – the only remaining memory of the ancient Temple of Serapis. And that’s just above ground. Dive into the waters of the Easter Harbour and swim through submerged archaeological sites including the popular ‘Cleopatra’s Palace’.
The city’s modern-day tribute to its ancient library takes shape in the form of the Bibliotheca Alexandria – a giant, sun-disk shaped structure presiding over the corniche, with a range of museum-style exhibits and a reading room capable of holding eight million volumes. The National Museum is another highlight, with its extensive collection revealing innumerable insights into Alexandria’s glorious past. The Ras el-Tin Palace, which was once a summer escape for Egypt’s Sultans, is another sight not to be missed, and the Abu Abbas al-Mursi Mosque featuring an intricate calligraphic façade is also well worth a visit.
Wander through the maze of side streets and back alleys flowing through the main souq (market) area and stop to sample a local street snack. Or explore the district of Anfushi that’s known for its delicious seafood and traditional coffee houses. Our top tip? A stroll along the breezy waterfront corniche – the pride of Downtown Alexandria – where you’ll see influences of the city’s cosmopolitan history.
